Arbitrum layer-3 gaming network Xai has had a good start this year following the launch of its XAI token, which was airdropped to early users of the project. So, what should we expect from Xai in 2024? Keep reading to find out.
Earlier this week, Tobias Batton, the founder and boss of popular crypto-focused game studio Ex Populus, said in an interview that his company is set to release the first games on Xai. Ex Populus helped to create the layer-3 network.
In the interview, Batton revealed that the first game from his game studio to launch on Xai is titled Final Form. The NFT cards to be used in the game are already running on the Solana blockchain but will soon be bridged to Xai. The Ex Populus CEO anticipates that the Final Form will be accessible to the public before the end of April. He says the game is now playable, but his team is looking to “polish” it before the launch.
Another Ex Populus game to utilize the Xai blockchain is LAMOverse. Last month, popular gaming influencer Dr. Disrespect said LAMOverse would feature LAMO toys with cartoonish environments. Batton says the game will roll out a few months after Final Form is launched. He adds that LAMOverse is also playable, but some final touches are necessary before its release.
Why Ex Populus Settled for Xai
So why is Ex Populus launching projects on Xai? Batton explains that his team spent a lot of time looking for a gaming network for its projects, but all of them had trade-offs, which made it difficult for Ex-Populus to build games. The CEO says they explored all Ethereum scaling solutions, including Arbitrum, whose developer, Offchain Labs, later proposed developing a custom gaming blockchain that would satisfy Ex Populus’s needs and those of other game studios. And that’s how the Xai network was born.
Ex Populus teamed up with Offchain Labs to create Xai. The game studio developed software to power the Sentry Nodes, which were sold last year to early Xai users. Ex Populus is expected to play a marketing role in an attempt to lure other game studios to the Xai ecosystem.
Laguna Games Announces Plans to Migrate Its Game to Xai
Laguna Games, the game studio behind the Crypto Unicorns game, has already announced that it will migrate the project, along with the associated NFTs, to Xai from Polygon in the next few months. Batton says several other game studios have reached out since the XAI token airdrop, and Ex Populus is looking to help them explore the Xai ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Batton reveals that Ex Populus’ main target is to become the Web3 version of the gaming powerhouse Valve, which owns several iconic titles like Portal, Counter-Strike, and Half-Life. Moreover, Valve runs the popular video game store Steam.
While this goal is achievable, Ex Populus must clear several stumbling blocks. For instance, the game studio needs to sell the benefits of NFT-powered games to traditional gamers who, over the years, have called out Web2 publishers that attempted to integrate blockchain elements into their games.
How Xai is Helping Game Studios to Attract Web2 Gamers
But Xai can make it easier for Ex Populus and other game studios looking to launch projects on the chain to witness adoption. According to Offchain Labs, Xai has gotten rid of the complexities associated with handling self-custody crypto wallets. These difficulties have been a major aspect keeping traditional gamers away from crypto-powered games.
Further, all transactions made within Xai-based games will be gasless, meaning players won’t incur network fees. To allow traditional gamers to play NFT-powered games without dealing with non-custodial crypto wallets, Xai makes it possible for all projects to have in-app wallets, which are easy to use. Digital assets stored in these wallets will be managed by the Offchain Labs team.
It is important to mention that there will be a feature for connecting self-custody crypto wallets to games to meet the needs of seasoned Web3 gamers.
