The bug bounty and security firm Immunefi announced the unveiling of Vault Systems to facilitate coordinated input between security researchers and developers toward resolving existing vulnerabilities.
The Immunefi chief executive Mitchell Amador admitted that the project developers should engage the input of security researchers credited with delivering big secrets to vulnerabilities facing decentralized finance platforms.
Amador added that the Bug bounty platform envisions harmonizing the input of security researchers into developers’ projects to resolve vulnerabilities, allowing hackers to wreak havoc on the DeFi ecosystem.
Vault Systems to Compensate Hackers Discovering Vulnerabilities
Immunefit revealed that the Vault Systems features a smart contract system facilitating developers to deposit funds allocated towards compensating hackers and researchers who report vulnerabilities surfacing in codes. Amador indicated that the Vault System would only release the funds to the discovering party upon verifying the vulnerability report.
Amador portrayed Vault System as one inspired by the desire to nurture trust among hackers and developers, given that they have portrayed a cautious engagement in the past. The executive added that all parties in the relationship are incredibly nervous.
Amador admits that project developers are justified to become anxious, considering that an unknown individual holds a big secret capable of ruining their system. The Immnuefi founder admits that such thoughts make the hacker community have a complex relationship with the project developers.
Amador considers that developers are continually nervous that their projects harbor unknown vulnerabilities that bad actors could exploit. In contrast, well-intentioned hackers are wary of confronting legal peril whenever they reveal the discovery of vulnerabilities. Also, the hackers’ community express concern that they would miss out on proper acknowledgment and payment when they make reports documenting the vulnerabilities.
Vault Targets Bridging Trust Gap to Boost DeFi Security
Amador reiterated that Immunefi targets bridging the trust gap by unveiling the Vault System. It demonstrates a means to safely transact within the space characterized by suspicion and caution for both parties.
Amador profiled the Vault System as inspiring hackers to hold onto their big secrets to cash the vulnerabilities’ knowledge via intel sharing within the secure setting.
Amador expressed confidence that Immunefi can offer a compelling incentive for both parties. He adds that capturing and onboarding the parties is possible only when the parties are within the undecided middle seat.
Amador acknowledges that improving security in the decentralized finance mandates urgency to break the party, allowing criminal hackers to have uninterrupted field days to exploit DeFi.
Vault System Potential to Save Million-Dollar Losses to Hackers
Amador illustrates that criminals had a field party during the second quarter of 2023, given the 63% increase compared to blockchain exploits in 2022. The Immunefi report conveyed in July reported bulk hacks where DeFi platforms suffered a $228M loss from 79 exploits.
Amador showcased the Vault System coinciding with the recently perpetrated exploit of Mixin Network. The decentralized exchange that offers crypto swapping suffered a $200 million loss when the attackers breached the system of its cloud services provider.
Amador acknowledges the existence of the dilemma on whether to integrate more security to safeguard against the vulnerability of DeFi space.
The DeFi space needs ever-more security since the ecosystem has become the broad attack surface. This understanding makes safeguarding the DeFi an extremely demanding exercise. Nonetheless, Amador is optimistic that decentralized finance is portraying maturing security.
The Immunefi founder projects that large hacks are bound to happen in the future, though at a relatively smaller scale compared to the enlarging DeFi ecosystem. It necessitates nurturing trust among the hackers and developers community.
Amador admits the essence of nurturing more trust between hackers and developers using Vault System to minimize the losses that may arise down the line. He added that every little activity that will bolster trust levels for the security community in projects could have cascading benefits to the projects and users.
