New research documents reveal that several inactive crypto and nonfungible token games have been idle for months. The latest research from Game7, a blockchain gaming group, revealed that almost 50 crypto games ceased development last year.
However, new information gathered by John Jordan, Big Blockchain Games List creator, indicates that the number of crypto games that have been discontinued or shuttered is higher. It is more than three times Game 7’s earlier number.
Developers Abandon Crypto Games
According to the Big Blockchain Game List, 248 crypto games became idle or were suspended in the first half of last year. Additionally, 162 were suspended in the second half of the same year.
This indicates that nearly 410 blockchains ceased activity in 2023, comprising more than 30% of the 122 games that have ever been on the list.
A lengthy period of no activity or updates was cited for marking a game as ‘suspended.’ During this time, the game became radio-silent on the website and all social media platforms.
Besides, other games have the ‘canceled’ mark since they have made public statements concerning ceasing development. The reasons cited for the shutdowns include the absence of funding, market conditions, or both.
The additional games include Gran Saga: Unlimited, Oath of Peak, Pixelcraft, Blankos Block Party, Arcane Magic, and Lost Archive Plus.
Challenges Facing Crypto Games
Concerning Blankos Block Party’s case, the Mythical Games group quietly revealed the suspension of the desktop game last month. This happened 18 months following a colorful unveiling of the Epic Games Store.
Currently, the NFL Rivals creator is preparing a Blankos Mobile game. Several blockchain games have been labeled ‘discontinued’ since they have erased their accounts and vanished.
Further, Immortal Game and Neopets Metaverse have ditched their blockchain plans to become noncrypto games. Earlier, Dominic Law, Neopets’ chief executive officer, revealed to a media outlet that they abandoned crypto since most of their fans do not care about it.
On the other hand, Immortal’s team claimed that ‘heavy cheating’ influenced their decision to move their game from the blockchain.
George Ishichos, Game7’s main contributor, was reached for comment by a media report. In a message, he noted that for its report, the group did not regard projects idle for long on social media as ‘halted.’
Instead, he claimed that a few ‘inactive’ games could be ‘silent between market cycles or the development journey’s initial stages.’Some question which blockchains experienced the majority of losses.
Big Blockchain Games List notes that Binance’s BNB chain experienced the highest number of shutdowns last year. Further, Polygon games, Solana, and the Ethereum mainnet also accounted for an outstanding number of discontinued games. In the second half of last year, nine games on Sui were allegedly labeled as suspended.
Assessing the Growth of Crypto Games
The chains that experienced the highest number of disappeared games or became idle correspond consistently to their relative sizes. An earlier report by Game7 noted that BNB and Polygon were the top two chains with a majority of the games.
Ethereum’s main net came in third, while Solana took fourth. Nevertheless, it should be noted that this new information is partially complete.
Concerning their respective blockchains, many games that shut down last year were labeled as ‘other’ or ‘unknown.’ Earlier research by a media outlet established this is a common problem since most blockchains do not vividly indicate the chain utilized on their websites, social media platforms, whitepapers, and other associated documents.
Since some games are pretty early in development, blockchain-founded information to clarify when teams have not unveiled any nonfungible token (NFT) tokens or collections is not much. As such, there is a possibility that some of the currently-discontinued titles labeled ‘unknown’ had not picked a blockchain to develop on before their discontinuations.
Developers Quit Crypto Games
Considering its relatively small market size last year, the number of canceled or ditched blockchain gaming projects was considerable. However, its discontinuation rate of nearly 30% corresponds to the wider gaming sector.
According to a 2023 report, 43% of non-crypto mobile games are abandoned during development. Besides, it reported that 83% of mobile games ‘fail within three years.’
In relation to studio closures, game cancellations, and mass dismissals, the general gaming industry also experienced a tough year. A recent newsletter shows that in 2023, nearly 10500 dismissals happened.
This year could have had a better start. Minecraft Legends has paused development upgrades in this case, while Discord, Twitch, Archiat, and Unity have dismissed several employees. 2023’s strategic and economic hurdles for the gaming sector might not disappear soon.
