The famous crypto wallet MetaMask is introducing another feature to improve user protection against phishing attempts, scams, and hacking cases.
The self-custody crypto wallet is unveiling another feature that offers security notifications as part of a new partnership with Blockaid, a security company. Freshly out of a low profile, Blockaid is a security firm initiated by Israel’s Unit 8200 cyber intelligence alumni.
Metamask is Making Security Stricter for its Users
Earlier this month, it revealed a $33M funding round, and MetaMask is one of the first clients. Talks at EthCC Paris concerning improving user experience have highlighted MetaMask as an excellent example of what should not be done.
However, Alex Jupiter, its product lead, said this will likely change soon, with several optimizations and updates moving to crypto’s number one wallet. However, it might take a while before the changes take effect.
Beginning today, MetaMask desktop users can leverage the new feature. In this case, they can opt-in under the MetaMask experimental setting and add the Privacy Preserving Offline Module (PPOM).
According to Barbara Schorchit, senior product owner at MetaMask, PPOM is an offline security engine capable of simulating and validating signatures and transactions before signing them. They utilize node RPC communication requests to a structured provider, meaning no additional information is transferred to an external server.
MetaMask Partners with Blockaid
Schorchit told a media outlet that Blockaid’s decentralized application (dApp) scanning solution can take any dApp completely, simulating all likely user interactions and confirming if the interactions are evil, hence establishing whether the whole dApp process is malevolent or not.
Persons who prefer to opt-in at the first step of the integration process will view alerts in case a transaction seems malicious. The new feature will be unveiled on the MetaMask mobile application later this month.
Schorchit stated that by the initial quarter of next year, they intend to ensure complete incorporation and enabling of the feature into the wallet by default, making it accessible to all users. The staggered unveiling is aimed at preventing ‘false positives.’ An example includes identifying genuine activities as malevolent so the feature becomes a reliable user inclusion.
MetaMask Privacy and Security Measures
Concerning the mentioned privacy-fundamental facets of Metamask’s new alert attributes, Schorchit clarified that the new module abolishes the need to disclose each transaction and signature request to third parties.
She said that both validation and simulation occur in the wallet contained in a user’s device, and the communication required is with the blockchain via the user-picked node provider. With the occurrence of exploits and phishing scams each week, the new feature seeks to address a significant problem in the industry.
Blockaid estimates show that an estimated 10% of the present dApps are malevolent. Additionally, the latest survey by ConsenSys concerning the insights of Web3 reveals that 47% of worldwide respondents quoted ‘numerous scams’ as one of the significant hindrances to accessing the crypto ecosystem.
MetaMask to Enhance Security Measures
Ido Ben-Natan, Blockaid’s co-founder and chief executive officer, said that for the ecosystem to be ready for numerous users, it must be more secure. He also said they were happy to partner with MetaMask to promote the charge in expounding how a wallet is supposed to protect its users.
Schorchit disclosed to a media outlet that inadvertent transaction results are among the significant reasons behind the loss of funds within MetaMask. In April, Blockaid and MetaMask introduced a parallel trial security alert feature for OpenSea, a famous nonfungible token marketplace.
Nearly 4% of MetaMask users opted in, which reportedly aided in averting asset theft amounting to $500M. Schorchit said that the experiment’s success also indicates the new technology’s potential to have a ‘significant’ effect.
Schorchit said that Blockaid and MetaMask expect the new privacy-enhancing security alerts to avert asset losses amounting to billions of dollars when the feature ends up being a default setting for MetaMask wallets.
