Founders of Xai, an Ethereum layer-3 network built to power blockchain games, have made it their mission to create a Web3 version of Valve, the popular video gaming company operating the Steam marketplace and behind several top-tier games.
One of the Xai founders, Tobias Batton, who is also the brains behind the Ex Populus game studio, told crypto news platform Decrypt on Saturday that they believe the Valve model will work perfectly in the Web3 gaming sector.
Just like Valve offers its self-developed games such as Portal, Half-Life, and Counter-Strike, Xai intends to launch its own crypto-powered games while giving external game studios access to development tools.
Moreover, Xai has adopted a similar game marketplace to Valve. That platform currently has less than one hundred games. By comparison, the Steam marketplace features more than 90,000 games. Batton remains optimistic that Xai’s marketplace will have thousands of games by the time the “Vanguard: Genesis” campaign ends later this year.
The Vanguard: Genesis Campaign
This campaign, which is intended to attract gaming developers and gamers to Xai through rewards, was launched on June 10th. Since then, Xai has witnessed a massive increase in transactions. L2beat’s on-chain data revealed last week that Xai accounted for 40% of the total transactions processed by all Ethereum scaling networks. The data showed that Xai had completed 103 million transactions, followed by Coinbase’s Base, with 84 million transactions.
It is worth mentioning that most of the network activity on Xai isn’t related to gaming. Instead, it is tied to user interactions with the budding network rolled out early this year as people attempt to earn rewards through the Vanguard: Genesis promotion.
However, several games have witnessed massive traffic since the start of the campaign. One of them is the Unicorns Bingo, a fast-growing play-to-earn game. Batton says more gamers will come to Xai when more play-to-earn games are introduced over the coming months, leading to increased network activity.
The Vanguard: Genesis campaign follows the Xai Odyssey, a campaign launched by the Xai Foundation in 2023, which fueled user activity by huge margins. During that campaign, Xai’s user base jumped to 503,000, and the blockchain used to process an average of 5 million in daily transactions. Participating users collectively received $200 million worth of XAI rewards.
Xai Foundation Announces Partnership With MIX
Meanwhile, Vanguard: Genesis is set to run until November. Batton and other Xai co-founders hope to onboard hundreds of game studios to the gaming network. Along with running the Vanguard: Genesis campaign, Xai founders have partnered with Media Indie Exchange (MIX), a gaming company that has promised to launch over 100 games on Xai before the year ends.
MIX owner Justin Woodward said earlier this month that his company had already developed at least 15 games to be deployed on the Xai network later this year. He added that they will come with more quests and rewards for the players.
Gaming Projects on Xai
As mentioned earlier, numerous games are available on Xai, one of the most notable ones being Crypto Unicorns, which migrated from Polygon, an Ethereum sidechain, on June 26th. Crypto Unicorns has experienced massive traffic over the past few days due to its play-to-airdrop promotional campaign.
The Lost Glitches is another crypto game on Xai. Batton has not shied away from supporting the gaming project on his X account. In April, he labeled Lost Glitches the best-looking card game, urging his followers to explore it.
Batton’s Ex Populus is also planning to deploy its own game on Xai this year. The card-powered auto-battler game known as Final Form will launch before the Vanguad-Genesis campaign ends. However, Ex Populus has yet to confirm the exact date.
“Expects More Vanguard: Genesis Campaigns,” Batton Says
Meanwhile, Batton says this year’s Vanguard: Genesis won’t be the last. He reveals that the Xai Foundation plans to run such campaigns twice per year in an effort to onboard more game studios and facilitate launches.
