China is eyeing to launch a system similar to the social credit system to run on metaverse technology. Reports indicate it plans to launch the system in other online virtual worlds.
China Mobile Developing Digital-Based ID
News of the planned launch of the system appeared on Sunday, August 20, publication by POLITICO. The publication indicated that the state-owned telecommunication giant China Mobile proposed developing a digital-based ID targeting all metaverse users alongside other online virtual world community members working with their natural and social characteristics.
The proposals acknowledge the need to safeguard order and safety within the virtual world. China Mobile considers that the ID would hold vital personal information. Among the details are identifiable signs, particularly the individual’s job, that would have permanent storage and easily shared among the authorities.
An illustration of the benefits of the Metaverse-based system would involve sharing details of a problematic user. Such individuals propagating rumors and chaos within the systems would easily be smoked out by law enforcement using the digital ID for punishment.
Metaverse-Based System Targets Improved Social Behavior
The proposal borrows from China’s social credit system as a state-sponsored development infrastructure targeted towards improving social behavior through scoring and ranking the citizens relative to different metrics.
The system has been in place to assist enforcement officers for several years. The Associated Press had in 2019 revealed that the Chinese authorities flagged anf prohibited social offenders from acquiring plane tickets over 17 million times in 2018. The report indicated that the authorities blocked other offenders from acquiring train tickets 5.5 million times.
China Mobile indicated that on July 5, it held discussions that led to establishing a focus group drawn from the Metaverse. The group leveraged the input of the United States Communications tech agency identified as International.
On July 5, China Mobile fronted the proposals as part of discussions with a focus group on the Metaverse by the United Nations’ communications technology entity, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Metaverse Focus Group to Hold October Vote on Proposed Standards
The metaverse focus group agreed to hold a subsequent meeting in October to vote on the proposals. The approval of the proposals would majorly impact the tech and telecommunication firms’ operations. Such changes are bound to occur since the ITU targets to enforce new standards aligned to Metaverse-based services.
Chinese firms engaged in the focus group activities are proposing additional metaverse proposals, unlike those adopted in the United States and Europe.
Metaverse advocates label China as playing the long game. Its proposals would constitute the standards for Metaverse when its usage becomes widespread.
The publication inquired about the nature of metaverse systems where the Chinese authorities actively monitor users’ identity details. It challenges governments to reconsider ditching China’s approach, which appears to threaten the immersive world.
